RedHill Farms is a collection of family farms in Petaluma, CA. Committed to sustainability, Animal Welfare, these farmers supply the people of California with the freshest, tastiest and most nutritious eggs. The hens that live on these farms are all pasture-raised on a minimum of 108 sq ft each, but often averaging over 700sqft per bird, with gorgeous views to enjoy while they breathe in all that fresh air and soak up the sweet sunshine. The eggs are hand gathered daily and are found in markets throughout the San Francisco Bay area.
WHAT IS PASTURE-RAISING?
“Free-range”, “cage-free”, what does it all mean? It means that the girls that lay those eggs don’t have very much room to be chickens. Pasture-raised is completely different.
It means that the ladies who lay these beautiful eggs are each ensured a minimum of 108sqft of pasture each during the daylight hours, and often get over 700sqft. per bird. They’re raised in the great outdoors with plenty of fresh air and sunshine, and, thanks to their freedom to forage freely on grasses, bugs and anything else they may find in the pasture. the eggs they lay are more nutritious and delicious.
This very specific number is the gold standard for pasture-raising as defined by Certified Humane, the most respected third-party Animal Welfare Certification Agency in the country. Though our girls are out there on all of that beautiful pasture every day, we also provide them with a supplemental feed that keeps them well fed and laying those beautiful eggs daily. Our feed is 100% vegetarian, antibiotic and hormone free.
But besides that, our girls are living the good life – doing what chickens do on fresh green grasses with plenty of space to be, well, chickens!
Being pasture-raised allows our girls to lay the most nutritious eggs out there. They love to roam about in the grasses and will eat just about anything they find in the pasture – but they particularly love seeds, grasses and critters. With this balanced, healthy diet of our supplemental feed and all the goodness they find in the pasture, our girls lay eggs with 2/3 more Vitamin A, 3 times more Vitamin E and 7 times more beta carotene than a factory farmed conventional egg.
And all that exposure to the sun translates into the eggs that our girls lay, Tests have shown that pasturing increases the levels of Vitamin D – by as much as 4 to 6 times more than regular eggs.
These are just a few of the many benefits of pasture-raised eggs, so eat up knowing that the girls who lay your eggs are living happy, healthy lives and providing you with the tastiest and most nutritious eggs.
The only time our girls are inside is when it’s time to sleep, or when they’re laying in their nesting boxes. These mobile chicken units are perfect for giving the girls a safe place to sleep at night and a dark and private area to lay their precious eggs. These units are rotated every few weeks to give the girls the freshest pasture, which is organically fertilized by the girls themselves!
This rotation of the MCUs is not disruptive to the girls – and they may not even realize it’s happening! That is, until they step foot onto fresh pasture with plenty of new grasses and bugs to enjoy.
Other than giving our girls plenty of space to roam and forage, RedHill Farms does not engage in inhumane practices such as de-beaking or wing treatments.
We do sometimes use an infrared beak tipping process when he chicks are one day old, but that’s only to reduce the sharpness of their beak hook. If we didn’t do that, they could do some serious harm to each other! This is a painless process and does not effect the hen long term.
